Well done to the Aussies

Re: "Australia to figure out how to enforce teen social media ban", (Spotlight, Nov 30).

I applaud the Australian government, and indeed the overwhelming majority of Australians for banning the social media use by children under 16 years of age. It is my dearest wish that this most sensible and timely rule would be applied worldwide and not only for children.

I would allow any adult only two hours a day to use this plague as it gives me the creeps and worries me, seeing the whole world permanently glued to it. Even when people are driving, walking, eating and jogging!

It has killed normal social interaction, made children zombies and above all is infecting people with fake news and stories 24/7.

Well done to the Aussies.

'Undemocratic' protests

Re: "People's Party won't join Sondhi rally", (BP, Nov 28).

The People's Party makes the pragmatic and right choice in opting not to take part in the protests planned by Sondhi Limthongkul. That people have a right to protest, just as they have a right to express opinions that some, even a massive majority, dislike, does not require joining the protests of a group led by someone with motives not obviously aligned with democratic principles.

If Mr Sondhi's former efforts with the PAD are anything to go by, his renewed anti-government activity reeks of Prayut Chan-o-cha committing a coup with the suspected connivance of Suthep Thaugsuban, as that typical member of the Democrat Party boasted of before being whisked away into a monastic silence.

Mr Suthep and his yellow-hearted PDRC mob against democracy now appear in hindsight to have been part of a cunning longer-term plan to return Thaksin, trailing clouds of unspeakable glory. That has certainly worked out well. Before May of last year, who could have imagined that, following his acts since overthrowing Thailand's constitutional democracy in 2014, Gen Prayut would himself counter sign the document that brought back Thaksin?

Still writing letters

Re: "Who is deranged", (PostBag, Nov 30).

Ray Ban is correct that polite political debate is a thing of the past. You're called a baby killer if you support legalised abortion. If you don't approve of Israel's genocide against Palestinians you're called an antisemite (even if you're Jewish like me).

One of several reasons I said I wasn't going to write any more letters was because of the horrible lies that have been written about me(Your online forums are a paradise for sociopaths).

But then I tell myself that some (not all!) of my critics are such stupid, vile people that no decent person will listen to them. While many good people will at least consider my views when I expose the atrocities that are committed against both humans and animals. Anyway, to paraphrase Mark Twain: I can quit writing letters any time I want. I've done it a hundred times already.

Constructive criticism

Re: "Derangement tag", (PostBag, Nov 29).

Songdej Praditsmanont continues to regal Postbag readers with his objections to what most readers would describe as honest comments by correspondents to some of his letters to Postbag. '

I hope the editor of Postbag treats with disdain the suggestion that any words that perhaps trigger Khun Sondej's sense of victimisation or upset his fragile ego should be censored.

Drop the disrespect, please

Re: "From Trump to libel" and "Stop name-calling," (BP, Nov 28, 23).

Rudeness has no place in Postbag and rude comments should be edited/deleted.

Rudeness, like calling somebody "ignorant," is counter-productive.

Postbag should be a place for learning what others think, putting forth one's opinions, and learning facts. Being disrespectful shows a closed mind. It also implies the author knows that facts don't fully support his opinion and he must resort to tarring an opponent.

My undergrad roommate in the Deep South was a southern Baptist who truly believed that God had created Caucasians (like him) to be superior to all other races (like me). I picketed against racial segregation. Nevertheless, we got along because we respected each other -- and I learned much from him.
