Welcome to the Pearl

Phuket is renowned as one of the “must visit” international holiday destinations around the world, with people for decades flying halfway around the globe to soak up the sun, shop and enjoy what has long been called the “Pearl of the Andaman”. If you haven’t been there, one of your friends have - and they’ve likely told you all about what you’ve been missing out on.

The good news is that in recent years with regional airlines feeding scores of new flights to the island it has since become the quick getaway of choices for people living anywhere in the region. Flights anywhere from 90 minutes to just a few hours have Phuket in touch with one-third of the world’s population.

Best of all is that the range of hotels and guesthouses cater to any budget, as do the huge variety of things to do. Arrive by private jet to enjoy a stay at a luxurious, quiet private villa or take a budget flight for a weekend out of the capital with your friends, partying or just lazing on the beach. The choice is yours. Along with nature adventures, taking in the local culture, competing in a marathon, triathlon or other sporting event, learn to cook Thai, get fit, take a self-defence class and try your hand at MMA, learn to sail or literally just get away from it all. There is simply too much to do in just one visit.

WHATEVER THE WEATHER

The best time to visit is from mid-November through April, as the island’s cool season warms into hotter months. For people living on the island the temperature during the cool season “drops” to the low- to mid- 20°s (Celsius) and gets no hotter than the early 30°s, but it is perfect beach weather for tourists and just keeps on hotting up until Songkran arrives in mid-April. A small warning for those not used to hot tropical weather, the Songkran holidays are hot (mid- to even high-30°s), and the very reason why fun-loving Thais start taking to throwing buckets of water on each other.

The annual rains return May through October as the winds shift to become the southwest monsoon. While many people avoid the wetter months, it is when the surf kicks up for those looking to ride the waves, the island is restored to its verdant green, and the rains are hit and miss with near-perfect days in between - all without the bustle of the tourism high season heavy bookings and traffic.

One of the best-kept secrets about the “low season” months through the middle of the year is that while the weather forecast is nearly always stuck on “rain”, most rain is nothing more than an isolated shower that passes by, leaving the sky a hue of blue that high season visitors will never see.

GETTING THERE

Getting to Phuket has never been easier with some 50 flights a day from Bangkok and many regional carriers flying direct several times a week from other destination hotspots including Hong Kong, Seoul, Tokyo, major cities throughout China, and now even India.

Regional airlines fly direct from Kuala Lumpur and Singapore, and VietJet Airlines now fly direct from Ho Chi Minh City, while local budget carriers fly direct to Phuket from Pattaya and elsewhere throughout Thailand.

GETTING AROUND

Once on the island, getting to and from the airport is best left to hiring a driver through your resort. When it comes to getting around, motorbikes are the norm for most explorers and are perfect for going anywhere, anytime, but come at the risk of accidents.

If you’re going to hire a motorbike, make sure you’re prepared. First and foremost, have some form of accident medical insurance.

To avoid having to pay roadside fines, international tourists are best served by having an “International Driver’s Permit” or at the very least a driver’s licence issued in your home country showing you are permitted to ride a motorbike. All drivers must carry their licences at all times when driving - no exceptions. Thais now have the benefit of using their new electronic driver’s licence recognised through the Department of Land Transport app.

Hiring a car makes a lot of sense for more risk-averse visitors and gives the freedom to roam off-island to enjoy the beauty of nearby locales. The same insurance and driver’s licence rules apply.

Local taxis and the iconic fourwheeled tuk-tuks are available. Much has been said about Phuket tuk-tuk drivers, but there are plenty of good guys. Just check and agree to the fare before getting in the car, then you can get started on one quintessential Phuket experience.

GrabTaxi is available on the island, with fares shown through the app before ordering your ride, for those who know where they’re going.

Beaches

Beaches are still the main reason people come to Phuket, with world-class beaches all along the island’s west coast. The range of beaches and development offer something for everyone, from bustling city-scape backdrops to quiet, laid-back areas for ultimate relaxation.

PATONG

The busiest beach in Phuket comes with parasailing, jet-skis and sun loungers, and lifeguards now on patrol all year round. The sands stretch for kilometres either side of where renowned Bangla Road abuts the beach road, leaving the choice of being across the road from key stall shopping marquees, bars and restaurants or in quieter areas, such as in front of Loma Park at the northern end of the beach.

KARON AND KATA

Karon Beach is easy to recognise with white sand that squeaks underfoot. Karon Beach, and Kata Beach around the point, both have enjoyed slower development and take a slower pace than Patong, yet remain a stone’s throw from all amenities.

Both beaches have long been main choices for families while still having resorts lining their beach roads.

NAI HARN

Nai Harn, the “last beach on the left”, is the island’s southernmost beach on the west coast, and has maintained its laid-back atmosphere with restaurants set back among the trees while still overlooking the bay. A community feeling permeates the entire area, with lifeguards and even beach vendors keeping an eye out to make sure swimmers - and especially children - are safe.

SURIN, BANG TAO, LAYAN, AND LEYPANG

Surin Beach and Bang Tao Beach straddling the headland at the southern end of Bang Tao Bay have long been favourites for long-term returning visitors and offer quiet sands with families and those looking to relax within reach of a handful of key resorts and hotels, especially Laguna Phuket, whose five high-end resorts border on the sands at the southern end of the bay.

The upper end of the same stretch of sand is known as Layan Beach and Leypang Beach, with the last kilometre at the northern end without any beachfront development save for literally a few restaurants and a beach club before the beach enters the southern end of Sirinath National Park. If quiet is what you want, this is it.

KAMALA

The small village of Kamala has slowly grown to become the beach area of choice for many visitors, away from the busy areas elsewhere on the island and keeping its local charm. A host of new developments in the area are holding the line in keeping the area upscale, but not expensive.

NAI YANG AND MAI KHAO

Nai Yang Beach just south of the airport has quietly grown over the years with only a handful of beachfront bars and restaurants, and a few hotels and resorts in the area, providing the only amenities. The area is marked for growth with more hotels and condo complexes rising in the area, but is expected to keep its relaxing charm for years to come.

Mai Khao Beach at some 14 kilometres long is Phuket’s longest beach, stretching from Phuket airport to the northern west-coast tip of the island. On a quiet day sharing the beach with someone is an event, leading to more resorts targetting the area for expansion in order to offer visitors what Phuket became renowned for - a quiet beach just a short stroll from your hotel room. Very few amenities available; just like beach picnics in the old days, take what you need with you and enjoy the sound of the sea.

AO YON

While tourists are keen to keep to the west coast, the small bay of Ao Yon on the southern side of Cape Panwa on Phuket’s east coast has been a quiet secret for Phuket residents for decades. The bay is home to a small flotilla of sailboats and home to island’s youth dinghy sailors and the handful of restaurants that line the beach offer a stunning view of Chalong Bay from the northern end, a view few visitors get to enjoy.

On the water

SNORKELLING

Unless you are looking solely to improve your tan, every tourist to Phuket sooner or later takes up a snorkelling tour to sample the natural underwater beauty the area became renowned for.

There are a plethora of snorkelling tours to choose from, from day trips to nearby Coral Island to speedboat charters venturing to the Ko Khai Islands or the Racha Islands to the south, or even further out into the bay.

Most speedy day trips depart from Chalong Pier, but be ready to get up early as many tours aim to make sure you get a full day of what you’re looking for. Nearly all tours include lunch and snacks, but check first to be sure. Also check the weather before deciding to take a day out on the water, and that guide and crew have your best interests, including safety, at heart.

Another often-overlooked option is to join together with friends and charter a yacht to explore the bay, even overnight, to get the best experience you can from being on the bay.

LEARN TO DIVE

Phuket has become one of the most poplar places in the world to enjoy diving, with hundreds of dive businesses on the island offering all levels of courses and providing tours anywhere from literally just off Phuket, south to the reefs off the Racha Islands and as far north to the Similan Islands and Surin Islands national parks off the west coast of Phang Nga. Liveaboard tours even head over to pristine dive sites off mainland Krabi and Trang provinces.

Both Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI) and Scuba Schools International (SSI) courses are available, and the likes of Phuket Dive Tours, Sea Bees, and All 4 Diving have been providing dive courses and tours in Phuket for decades. First timers can pick up the basics while refresher courses can bring you up to speed in no time. Open water courses up to professional dive instructor and dive master courses and accreditation are also available - there are even courses for kids to learn to dive.

With Phuket now so accessible by flights, coming back to discover new sites or to continue your progression to professional dive master is so easy. The payoff? Seeing pristine corals first hand and the natural wonder of swimming up close with whale sharks, leopard sharks, manta rays, and a host of other exotic marine life.

JOHN GRAY SEA CANOE

The award-winning sea cave canoe tours developed by renowned ecoenvironmentalist John Gray have for decades set the benchmark for exploring the beauty of Phang Nga Bay in the most natural, environmentally friendly, and impressive way.

“Excellent”, with no exceptions, on TripAdvisor, and even include a “Hong by Starlight” tour, originally created as a way to avoid crowds. Now, this unique trip is so much more than that. You get to see stunning views from the sea, discover unique marine geography, sea rare wildlife and more.

Nature bound

STEPPING OUT

Getting back to nature is just minutes away from anywhere in Phuket. From a simple stroll up Toh Sae Hill in Phuket Town to see the troupe of wild monkeys there to walks around the main reservoirs to enjoy the wildlife that comes to enjoy the waters. The more adventurous can even put on their hiking boots and set off along any of the network of jungle trails criss-crossing the green hills running the length of Phuket. But be prepared, if jungle hiking is your thing, take ample water, some food, and a mobile phone that works — just in case.

PHUKET ELEPHANT SANCTUARY

The Phuket Elephant Sanctuary made international headlines when the park opened in 2016 as possibly the most ethical animal attraction in the country. The park offers a new home for overtired elephants who have suffered working long hours in the logging and tourism industry. The park staff rescue sick, injured, and old elephants, welcoming them back into their indigenous habit. Visitors can observe elephants as they are at home in the wild, yet the herd are very people-friendly, accepting gifts of pineapples and bananas. The park claims “Your visit guarantees to leave you inspired, transformed and in awe of these majestic animals.” They are not wrong.

KHAO PHRA THAEO

On the upper-east side of Phuket is a large green tract of natural jungle unspoilt by development. Welcome to Khao Phra Thaeo national forest preserve. Technically a “Non-Hunting Area” as designated by the Department of National Parks, ildlife and Plant Conservation, the park is 24 square kilometres of nature trails to explore, complete with a natural waterfall that is best seen during the rainy season.

The park is also home to the Gibbon Rehabilitation Project, a centre that has now provided rescue, rehabilitation, and care to some 50 gibbons, a species that was hunted to extinction in the Phuket wild some 40 years ago.

The early days of tourism saw poachers shoot gibbon mothers in the wild elsewhere and take their young ones to use for charging tourists to have their photos taken with them. The centre has since taken any wounded, abused, and abandoned gibbons and provided them with care and rehabilitation, so they can be released back into the wild. Once free, however, many of the gibbons freely return to the camp for food and interaction with humans. The centre welcomes volunteers and provides education and outreach programmes.
