The Asian Football Confederation has chosen Buriram United's Chang Arena as one of the four venues for the AFC U23 Championship next year.

The decision was announced on Tuesday after a meeting of representatives of the AFC, the Football Association of Thailand (FAT) and the Sports Authority of Thailand (SAT).

The other three venues for the 2020 championship are Songkhla's Tinsulanonda, Pathum Thani's Thammasat and Bangkok's Rajamangala stadiums.

Chang Arena replaces Chiang Mai 700th Anniversary Stadium which is under renovation and will not be ready in time for the tournament.

The move came after AFC representatives inspected the four venues.

Asian Cup chief Yoo Jin-Ho said: "We have inspected the venue in Buri Ram and found that it is ready for the tournament. So we confirm that the stadium will replace the stadium in Chiang Mai for the AFC U23 Championship."

Buriram United have a number of U23 players, including forwards Supachai Chaided and Supachok Sarachat, who are expected to lead the Thai squad in the championship.

They would feel at home in Chang Arena, if they are selected and play there.

The draw for the tournament will be held at Bangkok's Hotel Swissotel Ratchada on Thursday.

The championship, to be held from Jan 8–26, is important as it also serves as Asia's qualifying round for the 2020 Olympics.

Meanwhile, Thailand coach Akira Nishino has appointed Issara Sritaro as his assistant to manage the U23 team for the SEA Games later this year.

Nishino, who oversees both the senior and U23 sides, announced the appointment on Tuesday ahead of the SEA Games to be held in the Philippines from Nov 30-Dec 11.

Issara was previously one of Nishino's five assistant coaches with the senior national team with the other four being Totchtawan Sripan, Anurak Srikerd, Nebojsa Stamenkovic and Sasa Todic.

Thailand have won the men's football title at the SEA Games three times in a row.

Nishino had a decent start to his Thailand reign with the senior team drawing with Vietnam and beating Indonesia in their first two World Cup qualifiers for the 2022 finals.
