Thailand will learn their fate in the 2020 AFC U23 Championship on home soil when the draw is made on Thursday.

The tournament will be held from Jan 8-26 at four stadiums -- Bangkok's Rajamangala, Pathum Thani's Thammasat, Songkhla's Tinsulanonda and Buri Ram's Chang Arena.

Chang Arena has replaced Chiang Mai 700th Anniversary Stadium, which is under renovation and will not be ready for the tournament.

The championship is important as it also serves as Asia's qualifying round for the 2020 Olympics.

The top three teams of the tournament will earn tickets to the Tokyo Games along with Japan who have qualified for the Olympics as hosts.

Japan are also in the 16-team U23 event and if they finish as one of the leading three nations then the fourth-place team will earn an Olympic spot.

Thursday's draw will be made at Bangkok's Swissotel le Concorde at 2.30pm.

Teams will be divided into four groups and have been seeded according to their final rankings from the last edition in China.

Hosts Thailand are also one of the four top seeded teams.

The War Elephants are in Pot 1 with defending champions Uzbekistan, 2018 runners-up Vietnam and Qatar.

The Thai U23 team are coached by Japan's Akira Nishino, who also manages Thailand's senior national team.

Commenting on Thailand's possible meeting with Japan in the AFC U23 Championship, Nishino said on Wednesday: "As far as I know, the Japanese U23 side are a strong team but no matter which group we are in, we have to create good results."

Nishino had a decent start to his Thailand reign as the senior national team drew with Vietnam and beat Indonesia in their first two qualifiers for the 2022 World Cup.
