The Thai boxers delivered what they had promised, adding five gold medals to the Kingdom's haul at the 2019 SEA Games in the Philippines yesterday.

The Thailand Boxing Association had set its boxers a target of winning five gold medals at the biennial tournament. They also captured two silver and an equal number of bronze medals as well.

However, the brilliant Thai effort was still not enough to earn them the the overall boxing champions' crown in the Games.

The Philippines, as expected by many pundits, finished first in the competition, grabbing seven gold, three silver and two bronze medals from the battles in the ring.

Wuttichai Masuk and Chatchai-decha Butdee lived up to the expectations of the Thai fans, signalling they still have enough steam left in them to serve the country for a few more years.

Wuttichai was dominant throughout his 69kg final bout with host country's Marjon Pianar to secure identical scores of 30-27 on all the five judges' cards.

Chatchai-decha, formerly Chatchai, was even more impressive in his 5-0 victory over Vietnam's Nguyen Van Duong in their 56kg title showdown as the Thai fighter outpointed his opponent by a large margin.

Anavat Thongkrathok had a tougher outing yesterday but managed to edge Vietnam's Troung Dinh Hoang on three judges' cards in the men's 81kg final. The other two judges both had the fighters tied at 28-28.

Thailand's other two gold medals came from the women's contests.

Sudaporn Seesondee, one of the Kingdom's pre-tournament title favourites, did not disappoint, overcoming a stiff resistance from the Philippines' Riza Pasuit to win the women's 60kg final 4-1.

Nilawan Techasuep enjoyed a relatively easier road to the top spot on the podium as she scored heavily on all cards to outclass Nha Uyen of Vietnam in the 54kg showdown.

Thailand had seven fighters in yesterday's boxing finals, but Ammarit Yaodam, who lost to Rogen Ladon of the Philippines in the men's 52kg, and Khunatip Pidnuch, beaten by host country's Charly Suarez, had to settle for silver medals.
