Ratchanok Intanon won the first badminton title of the year on Sunday in a 2-1 victory over former world number one Carolina Marin.

Ratchanok took 80 minutes to take the women's championship after defeating unranked Marin 21-19, 11-21, 21-18 to bag US$30,000 (900,000 baht) in the first trophy of the year.

The win was her second title in the Indonesian tournament. The Thai, seeded fourth in the tournament, won the event in 2010 -- back when she was only 15 years old.

Ratchanok thanked Indonesian fans for their support throughout the match.

Former Badminton Association of Thailand president Charoen Wattanasin posted a Twitter message suggesting that Ratchanok needs to correct the unforced errors that let the Spaniard come back in the second set if she wants to earn the gold medal in the Olympics in Tokyo.

Ratchanok beat Chinese Wang Zhiyi 21-12, 23-21 and Marin outplayed He Bingjiao 21-11, 21-19 on Saturday on their way to the final.
