The Football Association of Thailand (FAT) is keeping an eye on the Covid-19 outbreak and is ready to postpone the domestic leagues if needed.

The rapid spread of the Covid-19 virus in Asia and other continents has affected many football leagues with K-League of South Korea and J-League of Japan, two of the worst-hit countries outside of mainland China, both being postponed. The kick-off of the new Chinese Super League season has also been delayed indefinitely.

Deputy FAT secretary-general Patit Supaphong said the national football governing body is keenly following reports on the virus outbreak.

"Right now, we are ready to handle the situation and take whatever action that is needed, but our approach won't be much different from the one followed by K- and J-Leagues," said Patit.

"For the time being, all the league matches will proceed as scheduled.

"We don't know what will happen in the future but we are following up the news and coordinating with the health and other related departments.

"If the situation reaches a stage where we feel it could pose any harm to the health of football fans or players or put them at risk to being exposed to the Covid-19 virus, we will not hesitate to stop the league.

"Whenever government declares that the outbreak has reached the third level or even if a request comes from the Ministry of Public Health, we will make the decision to help prevent any further harm from the virus."

Meanwhile, Muang Thong United claimed their first victory of the season, routing Thai League 1 first-timers Rayong 3-0 in an away game late on Wednesday night.

Earlier, the Kirins had lost both their opening games.

In another match on Wednesday night, hosts Samut Prakan City failed to pick up a point as they suffered a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Bangkok United.
