Usual suspects grab the lion's share

Ratchanok and Panipak pick of female athletes, Nuttapong best male amateur at Siam Sport Awards

Badminton star Ratchanok Intanon, taekwondo fighter Panipak Wongpattanakit and swimmer Nuttapong Ketin were named the most valuable athletes of the year in the annual Siam Sport Awards yesterday.

Ratchanok was named the best athlete in the professional category after winning two titles and finishing runner-up three times on the BWF World Tour.

Affectionately nicknamed 'May', the world No.5, who won the 2020 Indonesia Masters, will compete at the All England Open in Birmingham next week.

Panipak, 22, received the best female amateur award.

Last year, she won several titles in the 49kg division with the world crown among her achievements.

Nicknamed 'Tennis', the Surat Thani native is the top-ranked exponent in the 49kg class.

She won bronze at the 2016 Rio Olympics and is seen as favourite for gold at the 2020 Tokyo Games.

'James Bond' Nuttapong won the 200m breaststroke gold medal at the 2019 SEA Games and was selected as the best male amateur.

The trio each got 100,000 baht.

National taekwondo coach Choi Young Seok was declared the best coach while the Taekwondo Association of Thailand received the best association award.

Nuenglarnlek Jitmuangnon was named the best Muay Thai fighter.

Wheelchair racer Prawat Wahoram was selected as the best disabled athlete.

Taekwondo fighter Panipak Wongpattanakit is the best female amateur.
