Thai League 1 may resume before September, the Football Association of Thailand (FAT) said yesterday.

The 2020 season was suspended after four rounds of matches in March due to the coronavirus pandemic and clubs have agreed for it to restart in September and end in May.

The government has started easing lockdown in phases and it is expected to loosen further restrictions tomorrow.

People have already been allowed to do sports for exercise such as running and playing golf.

FAT president Somyot Poompunmuang said if sports competitions are allowed to take place, then he will call a meeting of clubs to vote whether they want the league to restart before September.

"But first we need the green light from the government," Somyot said.

While the South Korean league has returned and some European leagues are set to resume, Somyot said the Thai league cannot follow in their footsteps.

"Each country has a different situation," he said. "We have to follow our government's guideline."

After four games, Bangkok United and Ratchaburi are joint Thai League 1 leaders with 12 points.

Meanwhile, Thai League 1 side PT Prachuap admitted that they are interested in signing Brazilian striker Cleiton Silva whose contract with Suphanburi expired last year.

The Killer Wasps said an agreement has not yet been reached as the 33-year-old forward's asking salary of 700,000 baht a month is too high for the club.

Sumut Prakan, another Thai League 1 club, also want to sign the forward.
