Putt the way you want but get the basics right

When Mr Pars missed the cut at the Travelers Championship in South Carolina last month, he called me after consuming a large amount of whiskey, asking if I knew of a good psychiatrist.

He repeated this request again after missing the cut again at last week's Workday Charity Open.

He missed the cut by a couple of shots after his boring two par rounds.

However, his first appointment with a mental health doctor was on hold as he's very optimistic he would make get a cheque at this week's Memorial Tournament.

It doesn't matter what you look like when putting, even if you have a very unusual putting posture.

Whatever makes you feel comfortable and allows you to execute that perfect stroke consistently and repeatedly is the set-up you should stick with.

If it works and you like it, no matter how unconventional it seems, use it.

But if there is anything unusual in your stance or posture that affects badly one or more of the fundamentals of the mechanics of your stroke, then you should change it.

Remember to try and strike the ball when putting just as the putter head is on its way up during its swing forwards.

This will help the ball to run smoothly and straight over the green and keep it on the line you wanted.

Out of Bounds: "It is really not true that only strange, mean, bitter, selfish and mentally unbalanced people play golf. Unfortunately, my wife is not that exception."
