Say the right things to stay out of trouble

Well, the year has just begun and already we have Mr Thomas apologising for an anti-gay slur he made as a putt slid past the hole and then we hear that Mr Cabrera was arrested in Brazil for alleged crimes.

We've all had putts slide by the hole that shouldn't have, and then made unsavoury comments but didn't have to bother with a microphone transmitting what you had said around the world.

Apparently one of Justin Thomas' sponsors has now withdrawn support of this particular golfer due to the incident, and one wonders of what will happen to Angel Cabrera's endorsements in this world of political correctness we all now live in.

Please don't get me wrong, swearing loudly or getting arrested should always be condemned, especially if it is particularly offensive or picked up by those who look up to you but I can't help thinking back a generation of how several young Australian professionals would have reacted if told not to swear after a bad shot.

One, who I could not possibly mention, was playing in a European PGA event many years ago and was informed that he was not allowed into the clubhouse's restaurant by the club's secretary because of his shirt.

The player asked about his trousers and if they were acceptable, and the poor secretary said that they were not important.

So, the young Aussie player went to the locker room and changed his shirt but returned to the restaurant wearing no trousers or under pants.

Imagine the near heart attack for the secretary and the look of horror of those enjoying their meals!

This story is still told at many a 19th-hole joint and perhaps underlines political correctness then and now.
