Thailand face Malaysia on Tuesday in their final 2022 World Cup qualifier with only a consolation prize and bragging rights at stake.

The Southeast Asian rivals cannot progress past Asia's second qualifying round for Qatar 2022.

With the eight group winners and four best runner-up teams advancing to the next round, Akira Nishino's men and Malaysia each have nine points with one game left in Group G.

Vietnam (17 points) will take on the hosts United Arab Emirates (15) for the top spot in the group.

The continent's second qualifying round for the 2022 World Cup doubles as a 2023 Asian Cup qualifying round.

The top 12 teams earn places at the Asian Cup finals. The third-placed sides will play in another qualifying round while the fourth-placed teams enter play-offs for spots in that qualifying round.

"Malaysia are a strong team," Thailand's assistant coach Anurak Srikerd said on Monday.

"We would have to work hard to beat them. A win in this game is important as it means we will be in the Asian Cup qualifying round instead of play-offs. Our target is to beat Malaysia and I believe that our players can do it."

Malaysia stunned Thailand 2-1 in Kuala Lumpur in the first leg in November 2019.

The remainder of Group G is being played in the UAE due to travel restrictions as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The War Elephants drew 2-2 with Indonesia and lost 3-1 to the UAE before Tuesday's game.

Thai teenage star Suphanat Mueanta said his team wanted to defeat Malaysia for their first win during their stint in the UAE.

"Every player wants win because this means a spot in the Asian Cup qualifying round," said the 19-year-old forward.

"We want Thai fans to become happy in our final World Cup qualifying game."
