Thai League 1 side Port will make their AFC Champions League group stage debut against Hong Kong's Kitchee on Thursday.

The Group J match will take place at Buriram Stadium, home of Thai League 1 club Buriram United, at 9pm.

It follows the opening Group J game between China's Guangzhou FC and Japan's Cerezo Osaka at 5pm at the same venue.

All Group J matches are scheduled at Buriram Stadium.

Playing on home soil, Port are seen as favourites against Kitchee, who are making their second appearance in the continental club championship.

"This is the first time that we play in the group stage of the AFC Champions League so we aim for good results," Port coach Sarawut Treephan said on Wednesday.

He admitted that the team's preparations have faced several problems during the Covid-19 pandemic.

"Some of our players played for the national team while others are not fully fit," he said.

While Port, who were eliminated in the preliminary round last season, are odds-on favourites, the coach warned his men against complacency.

"We will try not to disappoint our fans. We have studied tapes of Kitchee matches and we will not underestimate them. It will not be an easy game for us because they have several naturalised players."

Port's strike force will be led by Spanish forward Sergio Suarez who has averaged roughly a goal every two games for the club.

Port must keep a close eye on Dejan Damjanovic, the second-highest scorer in the history of the ACL with 36 goals.

The Montrenegrin is just one goal shy of Lee Dong-Gook's ACL record of 37 goals.

Kitchee coach Alex Chu Chi-kwong said: "Our team finished the league a month ago, so it's not easy to play these games."
