The 2021 Thai League 1 season has been postponed until Aug 13 due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Football Association of Thailand (FAT) said on Wednesday.

The move was agreed at a meeting between FAT and participating club officials yesterday.

The league was originally scheduled to kick off on July 31 and the postponement was due to a new wave of coronavirus cases.

The season's curtain-raiser will now take place with Thailand Champions Cup match between the Thai League 1 champions (BG Pathum United) and FA Cup winners (Chiang Rai United) on Aug 8.

The Sports Authority of Thailand (SAT) has told its 88 sports associations to cancel or postpone events with large crowds to be in line with the government's Covid-19 protocols.

Port eliminated

Thai League 1 side Port could only manage a 1-1 draw with Hong Kong's Kitchee in Group J of the AFC Champions League at Buriram stadium on Tuesday night.

The stalemate ended Port's hopes to reach the last-16 round of the continental club championship.

In the other Group J match at the same venue, Japan's Cerezo Osaka beat China's Guangzhou FC 5-0.

After five matches with one of round of games remaining, Cerezo have 13 points, Kitchee 10, Port five and Guangzhou zero.

The five group winners and three best runners-up in the east zone advance to the knockout round.

On Tuesday, Port, who are making their first appearance in the ACL group stage, went ahead after 12 minutes thanks to Pakorn Prempak's free-kick only for Matthew Orr to equalise for Kitchee a few minutes later.

"It was a good experience for us to play at this level. When we play at this level and we have a chance, we have to take it," said Port coach Sarawut Treephan.

Port end their campaign against Guangzhou while Kitchee take on Cerezo on Friday.
