Serbia oust champs US, to meet Brazil

Serbia and Brazil will face off in the semi-finals of the women's Volleyball Nations League 2022 tomorrow in Ankara, Turkey.

Serbia edged out three-time defending champions United States 3-2 (29-27, 25-23, 20-25, 20-25, 15-13) in the quarter-finals at Ankara Sport Hall on Wednesday.

Earlier in the day, Brazil, who were runners-up to the Americans in the 2021 VNL, were the first team to progress to the last four after they defeated Japan 3-1 (29-27, 28-26, 20-25, 25-14).

The winners of tomorrow's semi-finals between Serbia and Brazil will progress to Sunday's final.

Italy were to play China while Thailand were to take on hosts Turkey in the two remaining quarter-final matches last night.

The quarter-final between the United States and Serbia produced a total of 35 kill blocks, 21 for the Americans and 14 for the Serbian team.

Serbian outside hitter Sara Lozo delivered the match's highest score of 22 points, including three of the team's six aces, followed by captains Kelsey Robinson of USA with 21 points and Ana Bjelica of Serbia with 20.

Brazil's outside hitter and captain Gabriela Guimaraes led the scorers with 23 points, followed by opposite Kisy Nascimento with 20 and outside hitter Julia Bergmann with 17.

Nascimento and middle blocker Ana Carolina Da Silva each produced four of the team's 16 kill blocks in the match, against a total of six for Japan.
