Ratchanok and Pornpawee send Chinese rivals packing

Women's singles stars Ratchanok Intanon, Pornpawee Chochuwong and men's singles player Kantaphon Wangcharoen advanced to the quarter-finals of the US$750,000 BWF Japan Open in Osaka on Thursday.

Mixed doubles pair Dechapol Puavaranukroh and Sapsiree Taerattanachai and women's doubles stars Jongkolphan Kititharakul and Rawinda Prajongjai also progressed to the last eight of the World Tour Super 750 event at Maruzen Intec Arena Osaka.

Eighth seed Ratchanok defeated China's Han Yue 21-16, 13-21, 21-19 in the last 16 round of the women's singles event. She will next play second seed Tai Tzu-ying of Taiwan.

Pornpawee defeated China's Wang Zhiyi 21-16, 21-16 to set up a meeting with double world champion Akane Yamaguchi, who rallied past He Bingjiao of China 18-21, 21-13, 21-12.

Kantaphon defeated fellow Thai Kunlavut Vitidsarn 21-19, 21-7 and will play Shi Yuqi of China today.

Kunlavut was a finalist at the world championships in Tokyo on Sunday.

However, another women's singles hope Supanida Katethong bowed out after losing to third seed An Se-Young of South Korea 21-15, 21-11.

Dechapol and Sapsiree advanced after the second-seeded pair defeated Hee Yong Kai and Tan Wei Han of Singapore 21-14, 21-13. They will meet Ko Sung-Hyun and Eom Hye-Won of South Korea in the last eight today.

Jongkolphan and Rawinda denied Zhang Shuxian and Zheng Yu of China 21-19, 21-14.

However another Women's doubles duo Supissara Paewsampran and Puttita Supajirakul and men's doubles pair Supak Jomkoh and Kittinupong Kedren exited the tournament.

In other women's singles action, Carolina Marin of Spain ousted Line Christopherson of Denmark 21-10, 21-18 while Gregoria Tungjung of Indonesia defeated Pai Yu-po of Taiwan 21-9, 18-21, 21-9.

On the men's side, third seed Anders Antonsen of Denmark defeated Kodai Naraoka of Japan 21-17, 16-21, 21-19 while Kenta Nishimoto upset seventh seed Jonathan Christie of Indonesia 15-21, 21-13, 21-18.
