You won't learn anything by playing with players who are not as good as you. In competition try to be yourself, don't try to become someone you're not -- in other words if your normal demeanour is loose and joking beware of switching to a serious Ben Hogan type.
There are many good golf coaches who are totally different in their coaching styles, try a few and then take some lessons from the one you feel comfortable with. Never practice your full swing when the wind is blowing, just look at how futile efforts were at Troon. An example of how this can mess you up is when the wind is blowing left to right, the result of hitting balls into this type of wind will be that you will be inclined to swing across the ball and hit from the top. So, if you must practice on a windy day, find somewhere where the wind is blowing into your face. And if you find yourself having no alternative but to practice when it's blowing, just try and use your normal swing, don't try to hit harder and be careful not to practice too many "punch shots" as there's no follow-through on a "punch" shot.
Out of Bounds: A bad habit you don't want is watching the clubhead go back as you start your swing. Doing this will probably spoil any chance of hitting a good shot. Anything you do wrong taking the clubhead back is not as bad as watching it.
