The LP Bank Cup football tournament match between Thailand and Russia in Hanoi yesterday was cancelled as Typhoon Yagi hit the host country.
The organising committee of the three-nation tournament confirmed that the friendly game between Thailand and Russia had been called off.
The super typhoon, said to be Asia's most powerful storm this year, made a landfall in northern Vietnam yesterday, the meteorological agency said.
As the reports of the typhoon came in, the organising committee had an immediate meeting and informed the representatives from both Thailand and Russia about its decision to cancel their match.
Reports said the Vietnamese government has advised people to abstain from travelling.
At first, the tournament organising committee wanted to postpone the match to today, but the Russian team excused themselves by saying it would not be possible for them to rearrange their return flight owing to the on-going war between their country and Ukraine.
The hosts will inform the Fifa about the cancellation and it would not have any impact on both Thialand and Russia's international rankings.
However, the other match between Vietnam and Thailand on Tuesday in Hanoi is all likely to go ahead as planned.
