Busanan and Pornpawee to battle

Sweet revenge for Thai star Ratchanok

Busanan Ongbamrungphan and Pornpawee Chochuwong will face off in an all-Thai quarter-final clash at the US$420,000 BWF Hong Kong Open today.

Sixth seed Busanan advanced to the last eight of the World Tour Super 500 event after she defeated Yeo Jia Min of Singapore 21-15, 21-12 in 38 minutes.

Pornpawee also eased through her last 16 match against Komang Ayu Cahya Dewi, cruising past the Indonesian player 21-13, 21-9 in just 35 minutes.

Ratchanok Intanon was the third Thai to reach the quarter-finals of the Hong Kong tournament.

But the 29-year-old former world champion had a much tougher workout against Gregoria Mariska Tunjung before overcoming the Indonesian 21-12, 15-21, 21-10 in 47 minutes.

It was a sweet revenge for the Thai star, who was beaten by Tunjung in the quarter-finals of the Paris 2024 Olympics last month.

Ratchanok will play Tomoka Miyazaki in the last eight today after the Japanese defeated Thet Htar Thuzar of Myanmar in three games 13-21, 21-12, 21-12.

In other matches involving Thai players, Aimsaard sisters Benyapa and Nuntakarn, the seventh seeds, lost to Li Wenmei and Zhang Shuxian of China 18-21, 13-21 in the women's doubles last 16 round while Saran Jamsri bowed out to sixth seed Chou Tien-chen of Taiwan 15-21, 19-21 in the men's singles event.

In the other women's singles match-ups, China's Han Yue will face Japan's Aya Ohori in today's quarter-finals.

Third seed Han, who beat Thai player Pornpicha Choeikeewong in the first round, downed Taiwan's Liang Ting-yu 21-14, 21-13 while fifth seed Ohori overcame Saloni Samirbhai Mehta of Hong Kong 9-21, 21-16, 21-12.

Meanwhile Putri Kusuma Wardini advanced to the quarter-finals after top seed Tai Tzu-ying of Taiwan decided to retire when the score was 6-2 in favour of the Indonesian player in the first game.

Wardini will face either seventh seed Kim Ga-Eun of South Korea or Line Hojmark Kjaersfeldt of Denmark.

In the men's singles event, double Olympic champion and second seed Viktor Axelsen of Denmark defeated Su Li-yang of Taiwan 24-22, 21-6; fifth seed Kodai Naraoka of Japan edged compatriot Takuma Obayashi 19-21, 26-24, 21-11; seventh seed Anthony Ginting of Indonesia defeated Chi Yu-jen of Taiwan 21-18, 20-22, 21-9 and Jason Gunawan of Indonesia beat Christo Popov of France 21-16, 21-9.
