Bold Brazil blitz Thailand 9-1 in Futsal frenzy

Thailand finished as Group B runners-up after losing to five-time world champions Brazil 9-1 in the Fifa Futsal World Cup in Uzbekistan on Friday night.

Both teams were already through to the last 16 after convincing wins over Croatia and Cuba, but it was Brazil who got into their groove first, with Marcel denied by the crossbar after toe-poking from the top of the arc.

Thailand tried to catch Brazil on the counter-attack but left the door open for Marcel to pounce for the opening goal in the sixth minute.

Brazil doubled their lead in the 10th minute after a neat link-up play with Rafael teeing up Felipe Valerio to strike a powerful shot into the bottom corner.

Thailand pulled one back with less than a minute left after Pito was dispossessed by Narongsak Wingwon who then set up Muhammad Osamanmusa for a fine finish, only to find Brazil replaying swiftly after the restart with Marcel capitalising on Katawut Hankampa's save to put Brazil 3-1 up.

Thailand started the second half under pressure and conceded in the 23rd minute after failing to clear the danger in front of goal with Pito rifling into the roof of the net.

There was no stopping the South Americans as they increased their tally with Marlon turning nicely before striking past Katawut a minute later. Kritsada Wongkaeo conceded an own goal in the 26th minute and Pito netted his second in the 31st minute.

Marcel completed his hat-trick in the 36th minute before Brazil scored their ninth of the evening through Ferrao to end the proceedings.

In the other match of the same group, Croatia finished in third place after defeating Cuba 7-0.

Thailand will face Group F runners-up, either Iran or France, while Brazil will play a third-placed team from Group A or D in the last 16.
