Muangthai PK Saenchai says he will prove he is “no one’s stepping stone” in tonight’s ONE Friday Fights 84 main event.
The ONE Championship veteran faces rising Muay Thai prospect Kongsuk Fairtex, who is riding a three-fight win streak, at Lumpinee Stadium.
Thailand’s 30-year-old “Elbow Zombie” himself is looking to arrest a two-fight losing skid, especially after a close split decision defeat last time out by Kongsuk’s teammate, Nakrob Fairtex.
“I was a bit disappointed with the result [against Nakrob], but I respected the decision,” Muangthai told the Bangkok Post after passing weight and hydration at Thursday’s official checks.
“I do not regret it because I was able to make the fight entertaining for the fans. But this fight is significant for me, to prove to myself I'm no one's stepping stone.
“Kongsuk is a fresh face in ONE Lumpinee. His performances have been impressive. Winning this fight is important to me.
“I think he'll keep his game plan similar to his previous fights. However, I think it'll be in my favour if he decides to come in and trade punches.”
Kongsuk certainly has all the momentum, after putting together three consecutive unanimous decision wins over Yodlekphet Or Atchariya, Joachim Ouragi and Petsukumvit Boi Bangna.
The 24-year-old is highly rated at his Pattaya-based gym, but is keeping his feet on the ground ahead of the biggest test of his career.
“Muangthai is a great fighter. This time it will be a challenge, whether I can prove to myself that I'm good enough to win against him,” Kongsuk told the Bangkok Post.
“I don't feel any pressure. Every fight, I am determined to do my best.”
One thing is for sure – Kongsuk will be chasing his first knockout win at ONE Friday Fights – and a US$100,000 ONE Championship contract.
“If I win beautifully this time, maybe I'll get the contract. If it's the right time to be mine, it won't pass me by,” he added, after also passing his checks at Thursday’s weigh-ins without any hiccups.
“If I get a chance, I will definitely go for the knockout. I would consider it as a milestone unlocked for me.”
