Thai tennis chief Suchai Pornchaisakudom officially declared his candidacy for the position of president of the National Olympic Committee of Thailand (NOCT) on Monday.

The election for the new NOCT president is scheduled to take place on March 25.

The search for a new head of Thailand's sports governance has intensified following the departure of former deputy prime minister Gen Prawit Wongsuwon as NOCT president due to his election defeat and subsequent loss of the presidency of the Thailand Aquatics Association last November.

Thammanoon Wanglee, the first vice president, is currently serving as acting president.

"After careful consideration, I've decided to enter the race to become the new president of the National Olympic Committee of Thailand," said Suchai, president of the Lawn Tennis Association of Thailand.

"I would like to contribute to the NOCT, especially when it comes to cooperating with other international organisations. I do not have any personal agenda. I am willing to work with everyone and make sure things run smoothly," he added.

"I have been involved in the Thai sports circles for many years. If given a chance to lead the NOCT, I believe I can significantly contribute to the role."

Suchai will face opposition from Pimol Srivikorn, president of the Taekwondo Association of Thailand, who has already announced his candidacy for the presidency.

Khunying Patama Leeswadtrakul, president of the Badminton Association of Thailand and a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), is also expected to enter the race.

She holds numerous positions in international sports organisations and has garnered widespread support from the Thai sports community.
