Kamada strikes gold, Thai bikers fall short

Japanese cyclist Koki Kamada claimed the gold medal in the men's U23 individual road race event at the Asian Road Cycling Championships in Phichit yesterday.

Kamada clocked 2:52.34 hours to win the 127.10km race that started in Phitsanulok and finished at Bueng Si Fai in Phichit.

Mongolian cyclist Temuulen Khadbaatar took the silver medal with a time of 2:53.15 hours and the bronze medal went to Chinese rider Enqi Fu, who crossed the line in 2:53.57 hours.

The best Thai finisher was Tanawat Saenta, who came in seventh place in 2:54.16 hours. Aphisit Supan finished in 17th place in 2:56.34 hours and Tinnapat Muangdet was 42nd in 2:56.56 hours.

In the women's junior road race event, Kazakh cyclist Angelina Burenkova won the gold medal with a time of 1:57.53 hours. Taiwanese Chu Chih-i took silver in 1:57.53 hours and the bronze medal was won by Indonesian rider Syahla Syafiah in 1:57.53 hours.

Thai riders Taniyaporn Singtong was 12th, Pummrat Chaloemkij finished in 16th spot and Suphannika Chantorn placed 28th.

Meanwhile, Pakistani rider Ali Ilyas Jawaid, who won the men's master 35-39-year-old time trial event, was penalised for rule breaches during the race and demoted to last place in the event.

Thai runner-up Narongdat Sangchai was promoted to gold medal winner, while another Thai rider, Thurakit Boonratanathanakorn, took silver and the bronze medal went to Iraqi cyclist Ahmed Aldiwani, who had finished in fourth place.

The Thai cycling team have now won 12 gold, four silver and seven bronze medals with two days of competition remaining.
