Sponsor cancels Asian team meet

The growing differences between the Badminton Association of Thailand and the man aspiring to be its next president have led to the cancellation of the Asia Team Championship 2016.

The tournament was scheduled to take place in Bangkok in February.

However, it was yesterday cancelled by Jane Piyatat of the Granular Badminton Club, the title sponsor for the tournament.

Jane, who will challenge BAT president Khunying Patama Leeswadtrakul in next month's election, said he was not happy with the association's attitude.

According to reports, the BAT had sent a letter to the Granular Badminton Club, asking it to stop promoting itself as the organiser of the event.

BAT general-secretary Nahathai Sornprachum said the club was the title sponsor while the association was the organiser.

"We accept the club's decision to withdraw," she said.
