True Move H Universal Communication (TUC), the country's second largest mobile operator, has expressed confidence in becoming the first mover in 5G wireless broadband through its digital business convergence model and strong cooperation with partners.

TUC was the first mover for 3G service in 2011 and 4G in 2012, said Suphakit Vuntanadit, group chief commercial officer of True Corp, the parent firm of TUC.

"Why can't we do this again for 5G tech adoption?" he said.

By using a digital convergence model across True Corp in the past several years, Mr Suphakit said True has collaborated with a variety of partnerships, comprising network, device and digital content categories.

Partners include China Mobile, which holds an 18% stake in True Corp.

China Mobile has the largest mobile base in the world with more than 900 million subscribers.

China Mobile has already provided 5G commercial services in around 50 Chinese cities through a variety of real business use cases.

Mr Suphakit said True Corp and China Mobile have been jointly developing 5G tech use cases.

True Corp is considering bringing some real commercial use cases provided by China Mobile to the Thai market.

Mr Suphakit said the 5G network roll-out will be carried in specific locations initially, including industrial zones and downtown areas.

Piroon Paireepairit, head of True Corp's 5G Working Group, said the company is deploying 5G technology to support consumer and business needs for gaming and entertainment, lifestyle, agriculture, transport and logistics, public health, robots and safety.

These should contribute to improved living standards for Thais.

True's 5G tech showcase features use cases in a real-life environment at Siam Square and Iconsiam until Jan 14.

The event has a "World of Lifestyles", featuring an up-close and personal journey with a superstar through VR technology, a 5G robotic art experience that uses a robotic hand to remotely create a piece of art, and a "5G Waitress Relay Robot" providing an automated customer and greeting services.

The zone allows participants to meet and greet robots as well as a humanoid robot.

The World of Games and Entertainment event has interactive experiences, while the World of Innovations, which is held at Iconsiam, demonstrates how business transactions can be made easier, faster, more manageable and traceable.
