Our pick of tech and electronic devices for 2020

This year has been a weird year in the sense that the arrival of many gadgets and IT-related items were delayed, halted and in many cases cancelled due to Covid-19. But many cool items still managed to make it through and are significant enough that they will change the IT landscape in the many years to come. From mobile phones and laptops to gaming consoles and more, here are some of the new gadgets and items of 2020 that are definitely noteworthy enough to add to your shopping list, Christmas or not.

1. PlayStation 5

Cool factors: Virtually no loading time; 4K graphics; backward compatible with most PS4 games.

The downsides: Sony Thai will start selling these in late December, but some are unofficially sold in places like Mega Plaza already; still a low number of first party PS5 games for now.

2. iPhone 12

Cool factors: Fastest chipset on any mobile phone; tried-and-true video shooting capability; different chassis design from the last five or so iPhone models; has 5G.

The downsides: Mediocre 60Hz screen; gets hot easily; battery life is not good compared to the flagship phones of other brands; no charger bundled.

3. Samsung Galaxy Note20 Ultra

Cool factors: 120Hz screen; a phone with the best stylus that is accompanied with loads of features and apps to go with it; shoots photos and videos that are as good as an iPhone 12; can be connected to monitors both with cable and wirelessly to get something equivalent to Microsoft Windows; has 5G.

The downsides: It is a big phone; Exynos chipset that comes with some Note20s is subpar for heavy use like gaming.

4. Huawei Mate 40 Pro 5G

Cool factors: The phone's Leica lenses can take great photos even in pitch dark environments; has laser sensor for fast focusing; stylish design; has 5G.

The downside: No Google Mobile Service.

5. Lenovo Legion Duel

Cool factors: Reasonably priced Android gaming phone with the fastest chipset on the market; no-hole-nor-notch 144Hz screen; 5,000 mAh battery; dual-charging capability; has a very loud and bassy set of stereo speakers.

The downsides: it is big, bulky and heavy; the back has an overly aggressive design that may put some people off.

6. Garmin Instinct

Cool factors: It is a durable smartwatch that lasts for 14 days per charge; world-class health tracking capabilities; has GPS; looks like a normal digital wristwatch.

The downside: It looks like a Casio watch.

7. Dyson Corrale

Cool factors: It is a cordless hair straightener that does not kill your hair; ready to use in 10 seconds only.

The downside: It's a little heavy.

8. Apple MacBook Air with M1 chip

Cool factors: ARM-base CPU notebook computer that runs desktop and iOS applications at breakneck speed; battery lasts longer than most Intel-based laptops; has an always on capability.

The downside: Many legacy applications will not run … yet.

9. Surfshark VPN

Cool factors: We're currently living in a time and country where things get blocked online quite frequently. To counter that, here is an affordable VPN service that is reliable, cheap and works on virtually everything.

The downside: Some people may look at you a little strangely for trying to access blocked websites.

10. Dyson Lightcycle Morph

Cool factors: It is an adjustable and convertible desk light that can be controlled and scheduled, and the brightness and colour temperature can be adjusted both on the spot and wirelessly via phone; operational time is 60 years.

The downside: Price.
