True Move H Universal Communication (TUC), Thailand's second biggest mobile operator by subscribers, expects its 5G subscriber base will surpass 2 million by the end of this year, buoyed by the roll out of various 5G handsets with reasonable prices and valuable packages.

True's 2-million subscriber target for 5G is also at the same level envisioned by the country's biggest mobile carrier Advanced Info Service (AIS) by the end of this year.

True has launched a marketing campaign with special privileges to draw users to use 5G handsets, including a free True Premier Football Lite package, providing access to view four English Premier League 2021/22 matches per week via its over-the-top platform.

The company also introduced popular emcee Kan Kantatavorn as its new presenter.

Teeradet Dumrongbhalasitr, co-president of True Corporation, the parent company of TUC, said the pandemic has changed lifestyles regarding work, study and daily activities.

The company has introduced popular emcee Kan Kantatavorn as its new presenter for True.

People tend to rely more on telecom and digital technologies to stay connected with others in various aspects of new lifestyles.

Data usage has escalated, not only in urban areas but also rural areas, crucially driven by video streaming, gaming, online shopping and food delivery, he said.

Various models of 5G-compatible handsets have been rolled out with reasonable prices and valuable 5G packages, bringing True's 5G subscriber base to 1 million in June.

The strength of True, Mr Teeradet said, lies in seven frequency spectrum ranges -- the largest number of frequency bands compared with other operators -- covering up to 98% of Thailand.

Referring to its campaign for 5G subscription drive, he said customers can join 5G VIP campaign to get 5G mid-tier handset collection for free or a discount of 3,000 baht on top of already special promotions for 5G high-end smartphone models.

The special offer will be available until the end of this year.

Oliver Kittipong Veerataecha, chief brand and communications officer of True Corporation, said 90% of people staying at home during the pandemic engage in online activities.

The company now offers services at pop-up shops.
