Hitachi Elevator (Thailand) Co plans to offer a new service to make buildings "smarter" as part of its effort to apply more digital technologies to seek new opportunities in the Thai property market.

The company, which makes elevators and escalators, wants to launch smart building solutions to add value to its business post-pandemic.

Digital technologies, including the Internet of Things (IoT), can be used to ensure security at buildings and enhance the functions of elevators and escalators, the company said.

Prakasit Phornprapha, executive director of Hitachi Elevator (Thailand), said the company believes demand for smart building solutions in Thailand will follow a growing global trend in digital technology-related businesses.

Before the outbreak of Covid-19, Hitachi expected demand for digital solutions and services in the world market to grow by 15% on average per year.

The technologies enable a building to ensure wise energy usage as well as modernising the security system for people working or living in the building.

People are required to go through face verification technology to check their physical identity before being granted permission to enter the building.

Inside the building, power supply and lighting will be operated in an efficient way.

Mr Prakasit says the demand for smart building solutions in Thailand will follow a growing global trend in digital technologies-related businesses.

The smart building solutions will first be applied to a new office building of SM under a Hitachi pilot project.

Its new 32-floor office building, located near the Pathumwan intersection in Bangkok, is designed to be a premium-grade office building spanning 50,000 square metres.

Kitisorn Punnahitanonda, managing director of Hitachi Elevator (Thailand), said he believes digital solutions will become a global trend for building development projects.

Hitachi, which launched smart building solution in Japan several years ago, wants to market them in Thailand.

Four office buildings in Bangkok already purchased its digital products and services.

"The digital solutions include new talk-of-the-town products and services, following the world's fastest elevator [by Hitachi] installed at the Trade Centre building in the Chinese city of Guangzhou," he said.
