The Find X5 Pro 5G jabs at Apple and Samsung, but fails to land a major blow

Oppo punches up

Oppo's Find X5 Pro 5G phone has an elegant build and a quality feel all over, especially its pearly white back.

The phone is strangely heavy considering the size. The weight comes from the phone's back plate that is made from a special kind of condensed ceramic and claims to be twice as durable as the usual glass back on many phones. This plate dissipates heat faster than most glass and, boy, you will feel the heat after intense gaming for more than 30 minutes.

Everything is curved, there isn't a single square or sharp point on this phone's body. The curved design makes it easy to hold. But I recommend to always leave the complimentary plastic case on because the phone itself is extremely slippery. One time I left it on a table without its case and it slipped. Luckily, there was no damage.

The screen displays very detailed images and has top-notch colour accuracy and complies to the highest 2022 screen industry standards, runs at 120Hz for smooth scrolling, supports HDR10+, which will make the colours of Netflix movie look more saturated, and has various image enhance features (like making YouTube videos sharper and more colourful). But the phone's screen is noticeably dimmer than many of the 2022 phones I have tried recently.

I love that the screen shows animations when you unlock the phone. It's very smooth and classy and has quite a variety of animation choices to choose. ColorOS is very stylish and a fun variant of Android indeed. It may lack in some useful (and sometimes very niche) features that Samsung's One UI provides, but it makes up with style and fun creative designs and animations.

This phone has one of the fastest charging speeds in the industry right now, at 80W, which can charge from 0% to full in 30 minutes (the fastest right now is the Xiaomi 11T Pro at 120W). That means users will no longer routinely charge it before going to bed. Just a quick charge before leaving the house is usually enough to get you through the day.

Oppo has an outstanding track record of after-sales services. If something goes wrong, they often replace the device, no questions asked. There are plenty of Oppo service centres across Thailand in nearly every big department store as well.

This phone has 1,000Hz touch sampling rate. In theory, this means that while you play games, you can make your game characters respond to your controls four times faster than an iPhone 13 Pro Max, which has 240Hz touch sampling rate. But comparing the Find X5 Pro to my other gaming phone, the Nubia Red Magic 6s Pro, which has a 720Hz touch sampling rate, somehow the Red Magic seems to respond faster. I guess there are other factors at play to make things more responsive. But, having 1,000Hz to begin with will still give you a better edge in gaming than slower touch responsive phones.

Photo and video shooting are snappier than Samsung's top 2022 phone. It's quicker and is at iPhone level. The snapping sound effects resemble big cameras, hence the co-operation with Hasselblad. I also believe Hasselblad has something to do with how photos are much more lifelike than Oppo's previous phones, that favoured a vivid and over-saturated profile. This phone's photos are at Samsung and Apple levels in sharpness and colour accuracy, but videos lag, mostly due to the image stability system not being as effective compared to rivals. So if your hands are shaky you may be better off with other brands.

The phone also has a dedicated image processing chip, called MariSilicon X, which makes photo and video shooting less compressed and captures more data. Right now, the chip helps with capturing dark scenes and will make photos and videos brighter, but not over saturated. Right now, the AI in this chip still doesn't make photos and videos look better than its rivals, yet. But over time, having a dedicated image processing chip like this will give you better results if Oppo keeps tweaking it.

If you like a vintage style of photo, Hasselblad has added a dedicated photo and video mode that heavily applies its style, giving a vintage look to media.

The phone fully supports all types of 5G and has two internet antennas enabling it to receive signals better than many current top-end phones.

This Oppo Find X5 Pro 5G is a fully loaded elegant phone but lacks major "wow" features to warrant its high price tag. Wait for a little price drop and it will be worth the investment.
