3.9-magnitude quake hits Nan, no damage

NAN: A 3.9-magnitude earthquake struck this northern province on Saturday afternoon but there were no injuries or damage, the Seismological Bureau reported.

The quake, with its epicentre in Na Noi district, occurred at 2.57pm on Saturday. It was felt in the villages of Huay Kaew and Santisuk in tambon Nam Pua of Wiang Sa district.

Tinnakorn Thathong, director of the Mineral Resources Department Zone 1 office in Lampang, said the epicentre was in the deep jungle of Lamnam Nan National Park, where there were no human settlements.

The quake occurred because of movement along the Uttaradit fault line, which passes through Nan and Uttaradit provinces.

The Uttradit fault line, about 150 kilometres long, passes through Na Noi, Wiang Sa and Mae Charim districts of Nan province and Muang and Tha Pla districts of Uttaradit, said Mr Tinnakorn.
