Price slump of longan not so sweet

One baht per kilogramme is the miserable price of some longan that middlemen recently bought directly from growers right in front of their plantation in northern Thailand.

After the price of longan increased last year, followed by suitable weather and better water supply this year, growers have concentrated on better quality and increased production.

Nantawan Sakuntanaga, director-general of the Department of Internal Trade, said there is 28% more longan available this year than last year, which might be a result of last year's price rise.

Meanwhile, longan growers are waiting to hear what measures the government will take to solve falling prices for the fruit and to stabilise its price in the long term.

One policy planned by the government is to use celebrities to promote local products.

It is also hoped to increase the price of longan by increasing exports, particularly to China.

Although Thailand is known for its agriculture, producers are continually struggling with low prices.
