Cops identify man in girl's rape

Police have identified a man suspected of raping a 12-year-old girl at a deserted building in Ramkhamhaeng area on Wednesday night.

Deputy police spokesman Kritsana Pattanacharoen said yesterday the girl's mother filed a police complaint at 11.50pm, saying her daughter mentioned that she was taken to a building at the end of Ramkhamhaeng Soi 81/4 by a man, known only as Bang Nat, aged around 40, who later raped her.

Investigators were sent to collect evidence at the site and the girl was to undergo health checks.

"We have made progress in the investigation and identified the suspect," said Pol Col Kritsana. "Police are in the process of compiling evidence to seek a warrant from the court for his arrest."

National police chief Chakthip Chaijinda said he instructed officers to expedite the investigation and said forensic evidence would be needed to pinpoint the perpetrator.

After the police complaint was filed, officers took the girl to inspect the scene, which was on the fifth floor of a seven-storey building. Some people were found to be living in the facility, which was previously abandoned.

A volunteer who accompanied the girl and her mother to Hua Mak police station to file the complaint said the attacker lived close to the victim's house.

The man offered to give the girl a lift from school at 5pm before taking her to the building, where he sexually attacked her, the volunteer said.

The girl was later dropped at a spot in Ramkhamhaeng Soi 68, which is close to her house, the volunteer noted.
