Two provinces in Northeast hope to have 'smart' cities

The northeastern provinces of Roi Et and Nakhon Ratchasima have submitted proposals to join the "smart city" development project, according to the Digital Economy and Society (DE) Ministry.

Last year, the government began the project with seven pilot provinces -- Phuket, Chiang Mai, Khon Kaen, Bangkok, Chon Buri, Rayong and Chachoengsao.

The government is now proceeding with the project's second phase that cover another 17 provinces -- Chiang Rai, Phitsanulok, Nan, Ubon Ratchathani, Udon Thani, Nong Khai, Nakhon Phanom, Mukdahan, Krabi, Phangnga, Songkhla, Yala, Pattani, Narathiwat, Satun, Nakhon Si Thammarat and Ranong.

Speaking during a seminar on the Northeast and the smart city project in Khon Kaen on Monday, Passakon Prathombutr, deputy director of the ministry's Digital Economy Promotion Agency, said Roi Et and Nakhon Ratchasima had submitted proposals to join the scheme. Nakhon Ratchasima was also the first province to present a step-by-step plan, he added.

According to Mr Passakon, provinces that pass rules and regulations pertaining to the scheme would be granted a certificate -- a privilege that would make them eligible for investment projects and other cooperation frameworks.

"The seven pilot provinces have made continued progress and their performance has yielded tangible results," said Mr Passakon.

In Khon Kaen, work has been carried out to ensure its municipality is a liveable, efficient and sustainably developed city, he said, adding the province's achievements can serve as a role model for other cities to follow.

The province is pursuing public transport development, including smart buses, a light-rail transit system and smart car-parking spots, as well as mobile phone applications that make it more convenient for commuters.

Khon Kaen, he said, also uses digital technology to help manage public health services.
