Jail for fake uni trio

The Criminal Court has jailed two senior executives of World Peace University and suspended the sentence for a third after finding them guilty of running a bogus educational establishment.

The guilty verdict was handed down to Supanat Donjan, the university rector; Rewat Chatreewisit, president of the university council; and Anek Hiranrak. The three were found guilty of opening a university without permission, failing to operate study programmes and not registering an address for the university.

They were each sentenced to six months in jail, and also handed an additional six-month jail term each for fraud. However, the court commuted their jail term to eight months and cut Anek's fine to 80,000 baht because their statements were useful for the trial. The court then suspended Anek's jail term for one year due to his old age and his past contributions to society. Supanat and Rewat have appealed the ruling.
