American, Thai wife held in Pattaya drug bust

Police find nearly 1kg of crystal meth and pistol in Bang Lamung condo of couple

PATTAYA: An American citizen and his Thai wife were arrested in the resort city on Saturday on charges of possessing almost a kilogramme of crystal methamphetamine or “ice” and a pistol with 200 bullets.

Chon Buri police chief Nanthachart Supamongkol said officers had arrested Bart Helmus, 39, and Sirinapha Wisetrit, 30, in Pattaya after posing as buyers to order 10 grammes of “ice” from the couple.

Police later searched their condominium in Bang Lamung district and found 978 grammes of the drug in plastic bags, a pistol and 200 bullets and 205,500 baht in cash.

Pol Lt Gen Nanthachart said officers had ben tracking the pair for some time after receiving reports that they had been dealing drugs in Pattaya and nearby areas.

They were charged with possessing drugs and firearms without authorisation.

During interrogation, Mr Helmus told investigators that he ordered crystal methamphetamine online on the “dark web”, according to the Chon Buri police commander.
