BTS Skytrain passengers are now entitled to a full refund in the event a train is delayed more than half an hour, a source at the Department of Rail Transport revealed on Friday.

The BTS Skytrain operator has responded positively to a department request for cooperation in ensuring that passengers affected by train service delays receive proper compensation, said the source.

The waiting time is counted from when a passenger passes through a train station ticket barrier which reads his or her pass card, the source said.

Following the passing of the Rail Transport Act, the department is now preparing to issue organic laws to allow the act's implementation.

Under the act, the department is duty-bound to ensure decent standards of services on both the State Railway of Thailand's trains and electric trains on other networks, said the source.

The entire process of issuing the necessary organic laws to ensure all standards are met will take about a year, said the source.

Bangkok Mass Transit System Plc CEO Surapong Laoha-unya on Friday said the 30-minute delay refund policy has actually been in place for a while.

If a train is delayed for 30 minutes, the money credited to the pass card won't be deducted.

Single ticket holders can also choose to have a refund or re-use the ticket within 14 days, he said.
