SONGKHLA: A man has been arrested in Hat Yai on charges of raping the 10-year-old daughter of a friend who had let him stay in their home while he was unemployed.

Kosol Kliewklai, 55, was arrested in Soi Rattana-uthit in Hat Yai on Saturday, said Pol Col Kuekkong Ditsawat, superintendent of the Anti-Human Trafficking Division subdivision 6. He had been wanted on a warrant issued by the Songkhla provincial court on charges of raping a girl aged below 13 years.

Mr Kosol was jobless and had no place to stay. He sought help from an old school friend, who allowed him to stay at his house, where he was living with his daughter after separating from his wife, said Pol Col Kuekkong.

As the girl’s father had to go to work, he asked Mr Kosol to take the girl to school and pick her up.

Later, the father noticed his daughter looked quiet and did not want to go out. Because she appeared depressed, he took her to see a psychiatrist at Hat Yai Hospital. Eventually the girl told him the truth, which shocked him.

The girl told her father that she had been raped by his friend as many as 10 times, said Pol Col Kuekkong.

During interrogation, the suspect denied all charges. He is being held in police custody at the Hat Yai station.
