Security ties top S'pore envoy talks

Thailand and Singapore have agreed to step up security cooperation to deal with cyber security and threats from terrorists and extremists, Defence Ministry spokesman Lt Gen Kongcheep Tantravanich said.

He was speaking after Singapore's newly-appointed ambassador to Thailand, Kevin Cheok, paid a courtesy call on Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwon.

Lt Gen Kongcheep said Thailand and Singapore hope to exchange information and intelligence as part of efforts to promote regional security.

The two sides have also share similar views on the development of digital innovations to prepare for technological advancements, the changing global economy and environmental sustainability, the spokesman said.

Gen Prawit also admired Singapore's vision and success in transforming itself into a smart nation by making good use of digital technology, Lt Gen Kongcheep said.

The deputy prime minister also hailed the smooth and long-standing bilateral relations which have seen regular of high-level visit exchanges, the spokesman added.

Gen Prawit also told the new ambassador that Thailand is ready to work with him to enhance cooperation in all fields to benefit the two countries and serve their common interests, according to Lt Gen Kongcheep.

The Singaporean ambassador said he was an honour to have been posted to Thailand, and thanked the government for supporting efforts to strengthen bilateral ties, particularly in the area of security and defence.

This cooperation has been illustrated with Singaporean military training exercises in Thailand, and military logistics operations between the air forces of the two countries, according to Lt Gen Kongcheep.

Mr Cheok also praised Thailand, the current Asean chair, for its constructive role in promoting sustainable growth within the bloc, Lt Gen Kongcheep said.

He also said Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn will lead students and teachers from Chulachomklao Royal Military Academy on a study trip to Singapore next month.
