SURAT THANI: The body of an unidentified man was found floating in the sea off Bang Po beach on Ko Samui island on Sunday afternoon.

Pol Capt Issaret Samniangwan, a Ko Samui police investigator, led a team of police officers to examine the body, which was found at 1.15pm about 500 metres from the beach.

The body was of a tall man, wearing only a pair of brown shorts similar to those worn by fishing boat crew. The face was swollen beyond recognition. He was believed to have died about seven days previously.

No documents were found on the body, leaving his identity and nationality unknown.

Since there were no reports about a missing person filed with local police, it is not known whether the man was a Thai, a migrant worker from a neighbouring country or a foreigner from elsewhere. 

Police were to consult with the Surat Thani port-in and port-out (PIPO) control centre for. The body will be  sent a hospital to establish the identity and the cause of death.
