CHIANG RAI: Authorities seized 3 million methamphetamine pills and 40 kilogrammes of crystal meth, or ice, after giving chase to a car which broke through a drug checkpoint in Chiang Saen district of this northern province on Sunday morning, according to media reports.

Maj Gen Thanadpol Kosaisevi, commander of the Pha Muang Force that made the seizure, said the major drug haul came after a Toyota Altis with a Bangkok licence plate number sped through the checkpoint at Ban Ngiew Thao in tambon Si Don Mun at about 4am, defying a signal for it to stop for a search.

Rangers and soldiers from the 2nd Cavalry Regiment manning the checkpoint gave chase and found the car, which had skidded of the road between Pa Sak Noi and Pa Thon villages in tambon Pa Sak. The driver abandoned the car and fled into the dark.

Eleven bags containing 3,036,000 meth pills and 40kg of ice were recovered from the vehicle.

The initials 999 and Y1 were imprinted on the meth pills, indicating that they were produced by Muser and Wa tribesmen in Myanmar. The crystal meth was stuffed in tea bags.
