Hundreds of basic education temps rallied at the Education Ministry on Tuesday against a plan to outsource their jobs, demanding continued work with social security welfare.

About 500 representatives of nationwide teaching organisations and administrative temps under the Office of the Basic Education Commission (Obec) gathered for the rally on Tuesday morning.

The demonstrators complained that redesignating positions filled by temps as "outsourced" would jeopardise their job security.

It would change their status and deprive them of their existing social security welfare. The change affected about 60,000 teachers, administrative staff and janitors who were temporary employees at schools under the jurisdiction of Obec.

They also demanded that temporary teachers be redesignated special teachers, instead of temporary employees. This would provide support for the profession of teaching, which deserved respect from students and parents, they argued.
