The chief investigator into the murder of Karen rights activist Porlajee “Billy” Rakchongcharoen has been promoted out of the Department of Special Investigation (DSI).

The cabinet on Tuesday approved the Justice Ministry's proposal to transfer DSI deputy director-general Korrawat Panprapakorn and three other senior officials to new positions.

Pol Lt Col Korrawat will be an inspector general of the Justice Ministry once the reshuffles receive endorsement from His Majesty the King, the cabinet said in a statement released after its regular meeting.

Pol Lt Col Korawat played a key role in the investigation into the murder of Porlajee in Kaeng Krachan National Park in Phetchaburi province.

The work by his team at the DSI led to the conclusion that the Karen leader was murdered after the investigators found part of a burned skull in the reservoir of Kaeng Krachan dam. DNA testing determined it was from Billy's skull.

Prior to the DSI taking over the case, the investigation had been stalled for a long time.

The cabinet reshuffle is a promotion to higher rank for all four officers.
