NAKHON NAYOK: The fourth and fifth of the 11 dead elephants which fell to their deaths at Haew Narok Waterfall in Khao Yai National Park have been recovered.

Wichai Pornleesaengsuwan, director of the Prachin Buri-based Protected Areas Office, said on Friday that the areas where the carcasses were found were difficult to access because of strong currents and heavy rain.

It has therefore been decided that the carcasses will be burnt to prevent negative sanitary impacts downstream, he said.

Park officials and volunteers have now formed teams to monitor the movements of wild elephants to prevent them from falling from the waterfall.

On Oct 5, park officials found five dead elephants near the base of Haew Narok. Two days later, six more carcasses were located nearby.

Meanwhile, officials are also examining the quality of the water to make sure that the elephant carcasses do not foul the water in the Khun Dan Prakan Chon reservoir downstream, sources said.
