About 200 cabbies gathered with their vehicles outside the Transport Ministry in Bangkok on Thursday, repeating several demands including higher fares and a longer service life for their vehicles.

They parked about 100 taxis in front of the ministry on Ratchadamnoen Avenue, and sent representatives to talk with Transport Minister Saksayam Chidchob.

Taxi driver Chamroon Juprakhone said they had filed four demands in August and the Transport Ministry and its Land Transport Department had still not responded to any of them.

They want the ministry to allow an increase in fare rates and the airport surcharge, extend the service life of taxis from nine to 12 years, terminate the Taxi OK project that requires costly tracking devices, cameras and SOS functions on newly registered taxis, and allow individual taxi drivers to register for the Taxi VIP service, which charges higher fares.
