The Department of Internal Trade (DIT) has asked more than 18,000 pharmacies nationwide to display the QR code for customers on their premises to prevent the sales of overpriced medicines.
The department also sought the pharmacies' cooperation to put licensed pharmacists on standby to serve customers at the shops at all times during operating hours.
The department director-general, Prayoth Benyasut, said cooperation regarding the QR codes and pharmacists was to cater to an expected jump in customers and improve the standard of medical products and services provided by the pharmacists.
The cooperation was sought after the department allowed patients of privately run hospitals the choice of buying prescription medicines from pharmacies outside hospitals.
The measure came in response to mounting complaints from patients that they often had to buy expensive prescription drugs from hospitals' in-house pharmacies.
The patients insisted they should have a choice to buy drugs of a similar quality at lower prices from pharmacies elsewhere.
Mr Prayoth said with the QR code available at the pharmacies for scanning, customers would be able to make an informed decision about where to shop for their medicines.
