PATTANI: A village headman was shot dead by a gunman in a mosque in Sai Buri district of this southern border province on Saturday aftermoon, police said.

According to police, the incident occurred at about 6.55pm while Nitae Gumarording, the headman of Ban Cho Bo, was inside the village mosque for a religious activity.

Two men arrived on a motorcycle. The pillion rider walked into the mosque and opened fire at the village chief. He was shot in the back of the head and killed instantly.

The assailant fled on the waiting motorcycle.

Police were investigating whether the killing was related to terrorism in the region.
