No-confidence debate piques public interest: Poll

The no-confidence debate against six cabinet ministers is the most interesting current political issue, according to an opinion survey by Suan Dusit Rajabhat University, or Suan Dusit Poll.

The poll was conducted on 1,222 people thoughout the country on Feb 12-15 to compile their opinions on current political developments.

Asked to identify the most interesting political developments in the country recently, 39.04% of respondents cited the censure debate against six cabinet ministers including Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha; 29.59% the government's handling of the country's administration, especially economic affairs; 25.47% the government's handling of social problems such as the Covid-19 coronavirus outbreak and the shooting rampage in Nakhon Ratchasima; 20.36% the dissolution case against the Future Forward Party; and 15.68% corrupt practices such as alleged irregularities in military welfare schemes and forest encroachment.

Asked to cite the most vexing political problems, 41.77% cited inappropriate conduct by politicians, such as proxy voting; 38.58% unproductive work by politicians;  21.73% conflicts between the government and the opposition; 18.25% misuse of power and nopotism; and 14.36% the failure to prevent and solve problems.

Asked what would strengthen the government, 33.59% pointed to expeditious handling of problems such as PM2.5 toxic dust and Covid-19; 28.17% measures to spur the econnomy and promote trade and investment; 24.55% good governance and democracy; 22.48% alleviating poverty and promoting the people's well-being; and 18.60% promoting transparency and safeguards against corruption.

Asked what most erodes the people's faith in the government, 43.18% cited slow and ineffective address of problems; 34.05% failure to handle events that affect people's security in life and property; 20.19% lax law enforcement, discrimination and lack of neutrality; 13.64% the government's failure to carry out campaign policies; and 12.78% inappropriate use of the national budget.
