UTTARADIT: A barking deer, a protected animal, was caught on Wednesday morning after it was found in an area behind Triamudomsuka Nomklao Uttaradit School in Muang district.

The animal was believed to have fled from a forest near Ban Lao Pasa in tambon Khun Fang after a fire broke out. Villagers often set fire to the forest to collect wild products.

The school's teachers and janitors managed to corner the animal and catch it for fear it might be in danger if it strayed into the village.

Orasa Songsri, the school director, said she contacted the provincial office of natural resources and the environment for information on how to return the animal back to nature.

The office later sent veterinarians and officials to the school to conduct a physical check-up on the barking deer. The animal would be later sent to a wildlife breeding station in Khao Kho district, Phetchabun province, before being released into the forest, Ms Orasa said.
