Clinic shut over Botox blunder

A cosmetic surgery clinic has been shut down following the death of a woman who was allegedly injected with wrinkle-reducing Botox by a medical assistant.

The assistant, owner and surgeon all face a possible jail term as a result of the death.

The closure was ordered by the Health Service Support Department after the woman was found dead in her apartment on Feb 16 after having visited the clinic on Phetkasem 81 Road in Bangkok.

Authorities believe she died as a result of the side effects of Clostridium Botulinum, or Botox, which is a toxin and should be used in small doses.

Investigators found she did not receive the injection from a doctor as she was supposed to.

It was illegally done by an "assistant" at the clinic, department chief Tares Krassanairawiwong said yesterday.

After learning of the death, the clinic allegedly changed the patient's medical records by adding she had a heart disorder.

It was an "outrageous act," Dr Tares said.

By law, the medical assistant illegally working as a doctor can be subject to a maximum jail term of three years and/or a fine of up to 30,000 baht.

A clinic owner can be jailed up to five years and/or face a maximum fine of 100,000 baht for failing to run the clinic properly, while falsifying medical treatment documents can result in up to two-year imprisonment and/or a maximum fine of 40,000 baht.

The doctor could also be jailed for failing to prevent an unqualified person providing treatment, deputy department chief Akom Pradittasuwan said.
