UDON THANI: The director of Udon Pittayanukul School, an outstanding higher secondary school in this northeastern province, was killed in a road accident on Monday night, police said.

Pol Lt Ratthanon Kachanon, a Muang police investigator, said the accident occurred about 7pm at a curve on a ring road near the second bus terminal in Muang district.

She identified the school director as Banjong Moontrikaew, 59.

Police investigators learned Banjong was returning from the school to his home in the Samrong Municipality. The Mitsubishi Pajero he was driving ran off the road at a bend and overturned. The SUV was badly damaged.

Banjong was found dead behind the wheel with the safety belt still locked. He sustained a broken neck and deep wound in the neck, and was bleeding from the nose and mouth.

The needle of the speedometer was locked at 140 kilometres per hour, indicating he was going at a high speed.

Jakrapong Chaiyaphan, 58, a deputy director of the school, said Banjong usually travelled to and from the school in a van with a driver. Although it is now vacation time, he drove to and from the school in his car  every day to prepare the entrance examinations for Mathayomsuksa 1 and 4 students.

The body of the school director was sent to Udon Thani Hospital for an autopsy to establish the cause of death.
